Why is the peanut called peanut?

The peanut was originally called "ground nut" or ground pea" because it develops under the ground. The English even nicknamed them "monkey nuts", because monkeys in the zoo would eat them by the cartful. Eventually, the name peanut settled, simply because the size of a peanut is close to pea size. When peanuts are harvested, they are taken out of the ground and dried. They can then be roasted to obtain an intense aromatic peanut flavour. But that was not enough for us.
